Johor ruler in legal battle with contractors down under

Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskander is involved in a legal battle with his contractor over his new riverfront mansion in Perth, Australia.

According to The Australian, the contractor, Maek Residences, is claiming breach of contract. The report said the Johor ruler had filed a counterclaim.

Maek claimed that it was terminated as the contractor in 2020.

"Maek claims certain projects at the property, including gold leaf, pool tiling and audiovisual works, were unlawfully removed from its scope of works and were completed by another contractor," read the report.

Details of the legal troubles came to light after Chief Justice of Western Australia Peter Quinlan ordered the discovery of 29,000 documents relating to the project.

The project site was reportedly 2,000 square metres overlooking the Swan River. The Johor ruler bought the land for A$8.5 million (approximately RM26 million) in 2015.

"The home features six main bedrooms and another five bedrooms for staff, as well as two swimming pools and a series of cascading ponds down the cliff face towards the river. Its exterior is clad with polished marble," read the report.

The Australian reported that the property was within walking distance of some of Perth's most prominent people, such as media baron Kerry Stokes, Australia's richest person Gina Rinehart and Indonesian tobacco tycoon Michael Bambang Hartono, among others. - Mkini
