PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be fielded as a prime ministerial candidate for the last time, representing the Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) group of Malay-based parties, a party leader said today.
GTA deputy information chief Mahdzir Ibrahim said Mahathir viewed his involvement at the coming general election as part of a “jihad”, to heal the country from corrupt and destructive leadership.
Should GTA win power, Mahathir’s expertise as a statesman would be needed to lead the administration for the third, and possibly last time, he said.
“While his strength is not what it was 10 or 20 years ago, his wisdom and influence, particularly in crisis management, are still relevant,” Mahdzir said in a statement.
He said Mahathir would be supported by trustworthy and efficient political leaders, adding that with the combination of GTA’s inclusive and quality leadership, his role in governing would be simplified.
Yesterday, Mahathir admitted that there are still many who wanted him to lead the country again, but added that he had yet to make a decision.
“I’m not ready, but many people told me to, so at this point I have not decided. I’ve neither accepted nor rejected,” Mahathir said, when asked if he was ready to become prime minister, for the third time.
GTA was formed last month. It comprises Pejuang headed by Mahathir, and Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia, Barisan Jemaah Islamiah Se-Malaysia (Berjasa), and Parti Perikatan India Muslim Nasional (Iman).
The group has filed for registration as a formal coalition and hopes to contest the general election under its own symbol. - FMT
