MCA sec-gen brushes off 'unreasonable' Muhyiddin over war on BN remark

MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon has brushed off the announcement by former premier Muhyiddin Yassin that he was declaring war on the BN coalition, saying that it was most unreasonable.

“It is regrettable and even puzzling that Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairperson Muhyiddin (above, right) has suddenly declared war on BN.

“The timing could not be more unreasonable as the government pushes for economic recovery following the reopening of our country’s borders.

“In any case, MCA and BN will not be intimidated by the challenge hurled by PN. Our preparations have long been underway to face any party or political camp,” said Chong (above, left) in a statement.

He said that as early as the Malacca and Johor state elections, the relationship between BN and PN had been one of confrontation and competition.

“We hold no fears in confronting challenges from both PN and Pakatan Harapan as in both the state elections, BN succeeded in winning the voters’ mandate.

“BN and MCA have long foreseen that we will face two-cornered attacks from PN and Pakatan Harapan in the upcoming general election,” said Chong, a former deputy education minister and two-term member of the Dewan Negara.

“Our grassroots party members, organisational strength, and campaign machinery are ready to face attacks from any opponent,” he declared.

MCA currently holds two seats in the 222-member Dewan Rakyat and is seen as reliant on the resurgence of scandal-tainted Umno.

Yesterday, Muhyiddin Yassin declared open war against rival BN in the upcoming 15th general election, adding that all component parties in PN agreed upon this.

“PN will be supported by Bersatu, PAS, Gerakan, Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star), and Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) when GE15 is held.

“I don’t want to discuss Harapan, those are their matters. If they want to contest, they can. If Umno wants to contest all seats, go ahead.

“We in PN have an agreement, and among those agreed on is that our main enemy is BN,” he said at the sixth Bersatu anniversary celebration in Putrajaya. - Mkini
