PETALING JAYA: Police investigations have found more than 106,000 Malaysian-registered internet addresses to be suspected of sharing child pornography, a Cabinet minister said today.
A total of 106,764 IP addresses were identified from 2017 until August this year, said Rina Harun, minister for women, family, and community development.
The figure was worrying, and the trend was an unhealthy development, she said, especially as it involves a vulnerable group since exposure to child pornography leads to sex addiction, which can eventually lead to other sexual issues, Bernama reported.
Rina cited police statistics of sexual offences involving children, which showed that there were 641 cases of rape, 47 cases of gang rape, 127 cases of incest, 95 cases of unnatural sex, and 438 cases involving obscenity.
Launching a campaign against online sexual crimes against children, Rina said her ministry is using the campaign as an initiative to help and guide children, parents, and the community to deal with the current challenges posed by cybercrime.
The campaign has five main objectives, to increase children’s understanding of using social media wisely and safely, to highlight the dangers of unmonitored social media and to raise awareness among parents and the public about the use of social media among children.
The ministry is organising a two-day children’s conference starting tomorrow, which will be attended by the Children’s Representative Councils of Malaysia to represent the voices of children in the country. - FMT
