PETALING JAYA: Pekan Umno hopes that 100,000 people in the district will back a petition to seek a royal pardon for former prime minister Najib Razak, who has been their MP for 46 years.
The Unmo division’s deputy chief, Zamri Ramly said the petition has already been distributed among Pekan residents.
“We have distributed the petition forms for the pardon to all villages and (Umno) branches in the Pekan constituency. We are hoping for 100,000 signatures,” said Zamri.
“I really hope that everyone gives their commitment to this petition, which I will present to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong later,” he said at a solidarity rally for Najib in Pekan today.
Najib began a 12-year jail term on corruption charges on Aug 23.
The Pekan petition drive follows Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s announcement last week that all Umno branch and divisional leaders would instruct members to show their support for their former president.
Najib was imprisoned after the Federal Court upheld his sentence and conviction in the SRC International corruption case. - FMT
