PETALING JAYA: PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar says she intends to defend the Permatang Pauh seat in the next general election (GE15).
“Although I am not the one who decides on the seats PKR will contest, my heart desires it (to defend the Permatang Pauh seat).
“I hope that I will not be dropped from being a candidate here,” Bernama reported her as saying.
She said this prior to a dialogue with the village community management council in George Town today.
Permatang Pauh has been a symbolic seat for the family as Anwar Ibrahim, Nurul Izzah’s father, first contested and won it in 1982 under Umno.
He retained the seat in the subsequent three elections in 1986, 1990 and 1995.
In 1999, his wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail stood under the PKR banner and won the seat, after Anwar was jailed. She retained it in 2004 and 2008 but resigned soon after to make way for Anwar to contest the by-election after his release from jail.
Anwar won the by-election and retained the seat in the 2013 general election but was disqualified after he was convicted for sodomy again in 2015. Wan Azizah stood in the resulting by-election and won the seat before moving to Pandan in GE14, paving the way for Nurul Izzah to stand and win in Permatang Pauh.
Nurul Izzah, who is the party’s Perlis, Kedah, and Penang chief, said the Pakatan Harapan leadership had fixed Sept 20 to discuss preparations for GE15, such as allocation of seats and candidates. - FMT
