Opposition afraid of losing GE15 if held during monsoon, says Zahid

Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says BN is willing to wade through flood waters to campaign for GE15 if it is held during the monsoon season.

PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says the opposition is against holding the next general election (GE15) during the upcoming monsoon season as it is afraid it will lose.

Launching the BN Youth election machinery on Saturday, Zahid had said the coalition was willing to wade through flood waters to campaign for GE15 if it was held during the monsoon season.

His statement drew flak from Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders.

Today, in a Facebook post, the Umno president said BN will not give PH, and BN’s enemies, until next year “to continue discrediting BN” during PH’s mega roadshow.

“It’s clear the opposition is actually afraid that they will lose because trust in PH was lost when Dr Mahathir (Mohamad) did not want to hand over the (prime minister’s) post to Anwar Ibrahim. They also failed to implement their manifesto,” he said.

“That is why they need time to incite the people not to vote for BN. The PH tour is still on its way and is expected to end in February next year.

“BN will not give PH, and BN’s enemies, until next year to continue discrediting BN during such tours.”

Among those who had criticised Zahid over his comment about holding GE15 during the monsoon season were PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli, Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub, who stated that he was insensitive to the troubles of flood victims.

The floods which hit the country late last year claimed 55 lives and saw more than 500,000 people displaced.

Public infrastructure, residential houses and crop destroyed during the floods also cost more than RM6 billion in losses.

The meteorological department expects the monsoon season to start in November and carry on until March next year. - FMT
