Pahang to fly state flag at half-mast for late Queen Elizabeth

The Pahang state flag will be placed at half-mast for three days, beginning tomorrow, to pay respects to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

This was upon the order of state ruler Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, according to state secretary Sallehuddin Ishak in a media statement today.

Buckingham Palace announced earlier this morning of Britain's longest-reigning monarch’s passing at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

She had been suffering from mobility and health issues since late last year.

Elizabeth's eldest son Charles, 73, automatically becomes king of the United Kingdom and the head of state of 14 other realms including Australia, Canada and New Zealand. His wife Camilla becomes queen consort.

Meanwhile, Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah expressed their deepest condolences to the British royal family.

In a statement issued via Istana Negara's Facebook page, the king and queen said the monarch will be remembered by their Majesties, the government and the people of Malaysia for her commitment to the Commonwealth.

"Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will also be remembered for her dedication to the people and the government of the United Kingdom as well as for her deep concern for the welfare and well-being of the people.

"Their Majesties' thoughts are with the bereaved members of the royal family and the British people in this moment of sadness and sorrow as they come together to mourn the loss of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. May God bless Her Majesty's soul," read the statement.

The king and queen also reminisced their fond memories of meeting Queen Elizabeth II during their courtesy visit and luncheon at Buckingham Palace, London on Dec 13, 2019.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob also extended his condolences to the UK government and public, in a media statement this evening.

“Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will always be remembered for her selfless devotion to her service. She will be respected dearly for her unwavering commitment to the Commonwealth and her contribution to efforts to strengthen bilateral ties between the United Kingdom and Malaysia.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved people of the United Kingdom during this time of mourning and sorrow. May Her Majesty’s soul rest in peace,” he said.

Queen Elizabeth II, during her reign, visited Malaysia three times in 1972 (Special Visit), 1989 (11th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting) and 1998 (16th Commonwealth Games). - Mkini
