PETALING JAYA: A former aide to the late S Samy Vellu has urged Putrajaya to rename either Jalan Ipoh or Jalan Raja Laut after the longest-serving MIC president.
E Sivabalan, who served as Samy Vellu’s press secretary from 2002 to 2008 and then as his senior private secretary from 2010 to 2018, said this would be in recognition of the former minister’s contributions to the country.
He also called on MIC to suggest that the government rename the Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology (AIMST) university in Kedah after Samy Vellu, who helped establish it.
“The university which is being managed by the Maju Institute of Educational Development (MIED), the education wing of MIC, was the brainchild of the late Samy Vellu.
“His services and contribution to the development of the nation, especially in national infrastructure, need to be recognised,” he said in a statement.
Samy Vellu, the former eight-time Sungai Siput MP, died yesterday morning at the age of 86.
Politicians from across the divide in Malaysia and even abroad have paid tribute to the long-time MIC leader for his contributions to local infrastructure and the Indian community. - FMT
