PAS MUKTAMAR | On a journey towards the unification of Malay-Muslim parties, a PAS delegate today likened Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to a "locomotive head" pulling "carriages" that must be diverted to a different destination.
Taiping delegate Mahjube Hanafi, who debated in support of a resolution by PAS’ ulama wing, said the party should issue a clear statement on maintaining good ties between grassroots from both parties.
As part of a strategic plan, he said this could be done in the form of repeated invitations as evidence of PAS' welcoming stand.
"We appreciate Umno members and supporters at the grassroots level, because of their openness and readiness to ensure unity of the ummah.
"It is hoped these efforts can cut off contact or disconnect the hook between the head and carriages," said Mahjube.
The resolution tabled by ulama wing delegate Roslan Md Esa is for PAS to unite Malay-Muslim parties in Malay-Muslim areas; ensure a straight fight strategy to avoid clashes among Malay-Muslim parties; and reject any cooperation with Pakatan Harapan.
Roslan earlier alluded to Zahid's reported rebuke of PAS, that the party, having been rejected, should not insist on trying to unite with Umno.
"We must also see that the Umno president and his members behind him are like the locomotive head and its carriages.
"Umno members have good relations with PAS grassroots... they happily attend programmes at our centres, there are good vibes," he said.
‘Islam for all’ message
Meanwhile, Taiping PAS delegate Nazari Mokhtar reminded party leaders of the bigger "Islam for all" message in looking beyond Umno and unification of Malay-Muslim parties.
He also reminded PAS of the party's former Gagasan Sejahtera pact, and to not leave them behind.
"I would like to suggest we can't be a rhetorical hero. PAS must be seen as the true hero.
"If it’s true as stated (in the motion) on uniting political parties, I suggest we gather them together," he said, adding that PAS should also look beyond Malay-Muslim parties.
Further, the retired lieutenant colonel said PAS can expand its support base among veterans and their family members.
At the end of the debates, the motion was unanimously passed by the delegates present.
Last night, PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad declared that the party will not budge from its stand to pick both Umno and Bersatu in the upcoming 15th general election, as part of its unification of the ummah agenda.
Party president Abdul Hadi Awang had claimed that Zahid's rejection of PAS was a personal view, earning the Marang MP rebuke from top Umno leaders who stressed it should be taken as the party's official stand. - Mkini
