Zaid heads back to Umno for ‘reforms from within’

Zaid Ibrahim, who had brief stints with PKR and DAP, believes he can help Umno.

PETALING JAYA: Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has rejoined Umno, some 14 years after leaving the party and spending brief stints in two opposition parties.

Zaid had recently represented former prime minister Najib Razak in Najib’s appeal against his conviction and sentence in the SRC International case.

He said he had handed in his membership application at a special Umno briefing held at the party’s headquarters last month, The Star reported.

“My only intention is to help Umno. I have retired and there is not much work for me. I am not too busy and I go back to the party; I can help,” he was quoted as saying.

Zaid said that he wished to help Umno reform from within and that friends had previously said it would be difficult to usher changes from the outside.

“Finally, I feel that it is better for me to be with Umno even though the reform might take a long time.”

Zaid joined Umno in 2000. He won the Kota Bharu parliamentary seat in 2004 but was dropped as a candidate at the following general election.

He was suspended from Umno in 2008 and joined PKR in 2009, only to quit the party a year later. In 2010, he formed Kita but resigned as its chief two years later.

In 2017 he joined DAP, but left the party after three years. - FMT
