PETALING JAYA: Kamil Othman has returned to the National Film Development Corporation (Finas) as its new chairman.
The former Finas CEO replaces Zurainah Musa, who was reported to have said that her tenure had been shortened by the communications and digital ministry in December.
Kamil had also served as an adviser to the communications and multimedia ministry from January 2017 to August 2018, and as a Finas director from 2014 to 2016.
Communications and digital minister Fahmi Fadzil, who confirmed Kamil’s appointment in a Facebook post today, described him as a familiar face in the industry.
“I will arrange a meeting (with him) next week to discuss several matters, including the direction of Finas,” he said.
Fahmi added that the chairman of Finas’ mandatory screening scheme committee will be announced soon.
He said that his meeting with Kamil will also look into the findings and remarks in the Auditor-General’s report released last week in order to facilitate “improvements and corrections”.
The Auditor-General’s Report 2021 (Series 2) revealed that around RM4 million of funds under the Digital Content Fund were allegedly channelled to production houses with links to Finas directors.
Launched in 2015, the fund aims to promote creative content and enhance industry players’ competitiveness. - FMT
