PARLIAMENT | Five major feed millers will face the Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC) next month as part of an ongoing price-fixing probe, the Dewan Rakyat was told.
Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Salahuddin Ayub said the five firms had submitted their written representation on Jan 31 and hearings will be held next month.
"Following this, the MyCC will announce its decision in third-quarter," he said.
The MyCC was probing five firms for flouting Section 4 of the Competition Act 2010 which referred to prohibited horizontal and vertical agreements.
The five firms are Dinding Poultry Development Centre Sdn Bhd, FFM Bhd, Gold Coin Feedmill (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Leong Hup Feedmill Malaysia Sdn Bhd and PK Agro-Industrial Products (M) Sdn Bhd.
Salahuddin said this in response to a question from Abdul Hadi Awang (PN-Marang) who asked the government to detail what has been done to abolish cartels and ensure continuity in supplies of basic foods.
According to Salahuddin, the MyCC has made the food and agriculture sector a main focus and will act against cartels.
He said the MyCC can impose penalties of up to 10 percent of the worldwide turnover of those who flout the law.
The government will also be amending the Competition Commission Act 2010 to allow for better enforcement and introduce a merger control regime.
"(The amendments) will allow the MyCC to intervene early in an ex-ante fashion to prevent new monopolies by controlling mergers," he said. - Mkini
