Door open for ‘national assets’ Khairy, Shahril to join Muda, says sec-gen

PETALING JAYA: Muda is leaving the door open for former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and the wing’s former deputy, Shahril Hamdan, to join the youth-based party.

Muda secretary-general Amir Hadi said Khairy and Shahril, who were sacked and suspended, respectively, by Umno recently, were “national assets”.

“Their presence in Muda would have a positive impact on the party and the agenda we are pushing,” he told FMT.

“For Muda, anyone who is prepared to champion our cause, especially for economic justice and to stamp out racism, is welcomed.”

Amir also concurred with Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who said recently that the action against Khairy and Shahril was as good as removing the “magnet” that attracted youths to the party

Meanwhile, Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi suggested that Khairy emulate Muda’s Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and start his own party.

Amir said whether Khairy decides to join them or compete with them, the party was prepared to sit down with them and discuss a win-win situation.

“We are always open for discussions,” he said.

Last week, Khairy said he was mulling a political comeback in the upcoming Selangor state election.

The former Rembau MP said Selangor was the “political epicentre” of Malaysia and he planned to build a new political base in the state. - FMT
