Family urges MOE to hasten investigation on conversion claim

The Education Ministry has been urged to expedite its investigation into the reported case of a teacher who allegedly attempted to convert a student in Kuala Lumpur

Speaking to Malaysiakini on behalf of the student’s parents, Hindu Agamam Ani Association chairperson Arun Dorasamy said the investigation should be completed immediately for the good of all parties involved.

"We want the investigation to be completed immediately. We understand that the police investigation may take time.

"However, we want the investigation involving the MOE to be expedited. We do not wish for the investigation to just obscure the eyes.

"This is for the good of all parties, especially the students at the school," he said.

Earlier, Arun was asked to comment on the latest status of the incident which is still being investigated by the MOE and the police.

Malaysiakini previously reported that the teacher allegedly encouraged the student to convert to Islam, claiming it would increase his chances of becoming a national football player.

The student's mother has filed a police report regarding the matter.

Police have started probe

Cheras district police chief Zam Halim Jamaluddin said the police have begun probing the allegations.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code, which is causing disharmony for religious and public reasons, and Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, which is causing fear or panic to the public.

Meanwhile, MOE also conducted an investigation.

In a statement, the MOE informed that further investigation and appropriate action would be taken against any party found to have committed the act.

In the meantime, Arun reported that the student's family vehemently rejected the school's explanation that the teacher's urging for the student to embrace Islam was just a casual joke.

"When we met the school, they told us that the teacher was probably just joking.

"We absolutely do not accept the school's excuse that the teacher's conversation was just a joke.

"If it’s just a joke, maybe do it once or twice. Not for six months, to the point of suggesting Islamic names (to the student) to convert religion," Arun added. - Mkini
