PARLIAMENT | Deputy Education Minister Lim Hui Ying today reassured that secondary school teachers covering topics related to elections will not allow their personal political leanings to influence their students.
Specifically, Lim said the topics are covered under the History and Civic subjects for secondary school students, as well as through various extra-curricular activities.
"The question of whether teachers will influence students (with certain political leanings), our answer is certainly, no.
"We have faith in the teachers. For the History subject, teachers have a duty to teach all topics objectively," said Lim in response to a supplementary question from Wee Jeck Seng (BN-Tanjung Piai).
"Our teachers are taught to be objective and not influence students with any partisan politics," said the Tanjong MP.
Wee had asked the ministry to state measures taken to ensure that teachers will not influence students who will be first-time voters at 18-years-old with their own brand of partisan politics.
Earlier, Lim said the Education Ministry had also produced various teaching support materials in the form of PowerPoint presentations and videos aired on Didik TV that covered topics related to the election.
She added the related topics - including nation-building, the Federal Constitution and politics - are covered in stages at primary and secondary school levels according to a student's age and maturity. - Mkini
