Mukhriz desperate for a seat, says Hamzah

Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir has held talks with PN and PH, ostensibly on cooperation for the upcoming state elections.

KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin says Mukhriz Mahathir is desperate to get a seat, after the Pejuang president held talks with PN and Pakatan Harapan on the upcoming state elections.

Hamzah dismissed Mukhriz’s actions as merely trying to ensure his political career would continue, following Pejuang’s devastating loss in the last general election (GE15).

“This is a normal move for politicians like Mukhriz, to continue surviving in the country’s political arena,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby here today.

Mukhriz has held meetings with component parties from both PH and PN in the past week.

On Monday, PAS election director Sanusi Nor said Mukhriz had recently met the party’s top leadership, including its president, Abdul Hadi Awang, his deputy and the three vice-presidents.

However, Sanusi said the details of the discussions were not disclosed.

Kedah PH chairman Mahfuz Omar had confirmed on Wednesday he met with Mukhriz two months ago to discuss a “partnership” for the state elections.

Mahfuz said Mukhriz had expressed interest in forming a political alliance with PH in Kedah. However, he said he told Mukhriz the matter must be decided by PH’s presidential council.

The PH-controlled states of Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan and PAS-led Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu must hold their state elections within the next five months.

All of Pejuang’s candidates had lost their deposits in GE15, including former chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Mukhriz. Mahathir has since left the party. - FMT
