PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian search and rescue (SAR) team to the earthquake-stricken region of Nurdagi in Turkey was given a rousing send off after completing their mission.
The team spent 14 days in Turkey, having flown to the country on Feb 6.
As they headed for their flight back home from the Gaziantep airport, they were greeted with cheers from residents there.
The team members responded with waves and smiles as people broke out in applause for them, expressing gratitude for their work.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed pride in the efficiency and professionalism displayed by the teams helping the earthquake victims in Turkey.
The team comprised members of the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART), the fire and rescue department, Civil Defence Force and the armed forces’ Royal Medical Corps.
Tracker dogs Denti and Frankie were also included.
On Feb 6, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 hit southern Turkey and Syria.
As of Feb 13, the death toll in Turkey stood at 31,644, with another 106,428 injured, while in Syria, 5,329 have died and 14,500 were injured. - FMT
