Nurul Quits As Senior Adviser But Gets In Again Through Another Door

The news says Nurul Izzah has quit as Senior Adviser to the FM/PM.

Here is the news:

  • Nurul new role co-chair of secretariat of advisory panel to FM
  • confirmed no longer senior adviser on econs & finance to PM
  • joining secretariat formed by advisory panel for FM as co-chair
  • (Advisory committee chairman) Hassan (Marican) invited me to join
  • to strengthen country’s and rakyat’s economy she said

(OSTB : Wow!!)

I humbly accept

(OSTB : Wow! So humble!)

Nurul expressed gratitude for support throughout her shortlived role in PMO

(OSTB : If there had been support, it would not be so shortlived)

  • chairman Hassan announced she was invited to co-chair secretariat
  • decision to form secretariat made during panel’s first meeting on Fri

(OSTB : Hello brader Hassan Marican, long time ago I did MLNG2 for you boys

But the fact that you decided to form the secretariat just two days ago (on Friday 10 Feb 2023)  is just too obvious isnt it?  Any rational person can see that you set up this secretariat and then Nurul was appointed the co-chair.

Look at it this way lah. Say Muhyiddin appointed his daughter as Special Adviser to the PM. That would not have been a good thing to do. Everyone would have screamed nepotism. So Muhyiddin's daughter quit. Then they set up a secretariat to the advisory panel to the PM and again appointed Muhyiddin's daughter as the co-chair over there instead. And somehow, by some magic, that becomes a good thing? Takkan glaucoma bro. Tak nampak ke?)

I can imagine conversations like this : Bapak kata apa?  Or 'Nanti saya tanya bapak'.

Whether special adviser, senior adviser or co-chairman is besides the point. The definition of nepotism has nothing to do with the job rank or job name. She can even be appointed to a junior clerical role, it will still not make it any better.

It is who she is that creates the dissonance. Her father is the prime minister and finance minister. Wherever she sits, in whatever capacity, the power and influence will reside with her.  It is not just a question of nepotism but also potential conflict of interest and potential abuse of position. (If you still cannot get it please refer back the hypothetical example of Muhyiddin's daughter that I quoted above).

Here is a simpler question : Why the paranoia in appointing the daughter to such influential and powerful positions? Why?

p.s Someone pointed out to me that among that new five-man Economic Advisory Panel that has been recently appointed one of them is a CEO of an oil and gas company whose major client is the national oil company.

I can see red lights and alarm bells going off on that one too.
