PN keeps Kemaman: Judge agrees 'defective' facts on bribery claims

PN's Kemaman candidate Che Alias Hamid has retained his seat won during the 15th general election after Terengganu Election Court judge, Justice Mohamad Abazafree Mohd Abbas, dismissed a petition filed by BN, according to Bernama.

PAS law and human rights bureau secretary Ahmad Lufti Awang said the judge also ordered petitioner Wan Mohamad Hisham Wan Abdul Jalil to pay costs totalling RM30,000.

Ahmad Lutfi said Mohamad Abazafree had agreed with one of the four preliminary objection issues presented by the respondent, that the petition contained defective and invalid facts to support the allegations of bribery and corruption in the election.

He said this was because the seven official programmes organised by the Terengganu government, namely Bantuan i-Belia, i-Siswa and donation programmes for the disabled and asnaf (tithe recipient) group, showed no details of bribery or kickbacks, including information on the alleged recipients or that they were also registered voters.

However, the court allowed Wan Mohamad Hisham to file an appeal to the Federal Court within 14 days, according to Bernama.

Che Alias (above) was represented by lawyers Saifuddin Othman, Wan Rohimi Wan Daud and Mohd Nasir Embong.

Lawyers Hafarizam Harun, Abu Bakar Isa Ramat, Amin Othman, Mohamed Baharudeen and Norhazira Abu Haiyan acted for Wan Mohamad Hisham.

Terengganu Umno chief Ahmad Said previously said among the points raised in the petition filed against PN's victories in Kemaman, Marang and Kuala Terengganu were allegations that PAS had bribed voters by distributing financial aid from the state government through the i-Pension, i-Belia and i-Student initiatives between Nov 15 and 17, 2022, which was just a few days before GE15. - Mkini
