Police have confirmed that electrocution was the cause of death in Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) student S Vinosiny’s case.
This comes two days after the Alor Setar Coroner’s Court verdict that Vinosiny died of the same reason, confirming the initial speculation surrounding her death.
In a statement yesterday, Kedah police chief Wan Hassan Wan Ahmad said the cause of Vinosiny’s death was revealed in an autopsy report dated May 22, 2022.
“The autopsy report found that her cause of death was due to electrocution.
“The forensic histopathology report on the deceased’s heart tissues indicated that she had myocardial fibrosis and with the condition, it increased her risk of experiencing heart rhythm disorder that is fatal when coupled with a low voltage electric shock,” he added.
As a result of the investigation, the police have ruled out foul play and referred the case to the coroner’s office for further instructions.
Don’t make speculation
Wan Hassan advised the public not to make unwarranted speculations that could threaten the credibility of any party including the investigations.
On Feb 15, the family's lawyer M Manoharan claimed that an inquest into the 20-year-old’s death was done without the family’s knowledge. The family had urged authorities to open an inquest into the incident last October.
It has been over nine months since Vinosiny, who was in the fourth semester of her accounting and information system studies, died on May 21 last year.
She passed away in her dorm room at UUM’s campus in Sintok, Kedah.
The student was suspected to have suffered a fatal electric shock, which the family claimed was backed by injuries on her body and the post-mortem findings.
According to the victim’s father, R Sivakumar, he received a call from UUM management at about 3pm on the day of the incident and was told that Vinosiny was found unconscious in her room.
He claimed that the caller was vague about what had happened and he was only told that his daughter had died after asking if there was any sign of life.
Sivakumar told Malaysiakini last year that his daughter’s body had obvious burn marks on her face and right hand with two of her fingers a purple-blackish colour when the doctor showed him her remains at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar.
UUM has been accused of not being forthcoming on the circumstances of Vinosiny’s death. However, the university apologised to the family on May 31 last year and vowed full cooperation with them to find out the truth. - Mkini
