Police are wrapping up their investigation into a case where the mother of a teen footballer accused her son’s teacher of encouraging him to embrace Islam.
Cheras district police chief Zam Halim Jamaluddin said the probe is at its final stage and they expect to submit the investigation paper to the deputy public prosecutor this Thursday.
“Investigation into this case is at its final phase. We expect that by the day after tomorrow, the investigation paper can be sent to the deputy public prosecutor.
“We will then wait for the deputy public prosecutor to make a decision,” he told Malaysiakini.
Zam Halim was commenting on the case of a secondary school teacher in Kuala Lumpur, who was accused of encouraging his Form Three student who is a footballer to embrace Islam.
He allegedly told the student that doing so would boost his chances of becoming a national footballer.
The boy’s mother, who identified herself as “Vasan”, claimed that her 15-year-old son was also told by a classmate in a Whatsapp group that “only Muslims are allowed to enter stadiums in Malaysia”.
She had learned about the incident on Feb 3 when her son showed her the messages in the Whatsapp group created for the class by the teacher.
The case is being investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code, which stipulates offences related to promoting racial or religious enmity. - Mkini
