Former Umno women's wing chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil has marked her return to active politics by joining the race for her former position.
Shahrizat, who held the position from 2009 to 2018, filed her nomination papers today through a representative at 11am.
When contacted, Shahrizat (above) declined to comment beyond confirming that she had made the filing.
The 69-year-old decided not to defend her position as Wanita Umno chief in 2018 to make way for new blood.
"In politics, we need to realise when we should step down. I have been in this field for a long time. It is time to give way to those who are younger. I have worked with many Wanita members and many are capable of leading.
"I am confident that I am leaving the Wanita wing to the best candidate," she had told reporters then.
Shahrizat will be facing her successor Noraini Ahmad, who is the Parit Sulong MP.
The election for the leadership of all Umno wings will take place on March 11.
Shahrizat was a four-term MP for Lembah Pantai until she was defeated in 2008. Since then, she has not been fielded for any parliamentary elections.
Sources told Malaysiakini that Shahrizat's decision to restart her political career was due to the internal conflict in Wanita Umno. - Mkini
