Sports minister flays ex-shuttler over racism

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has criticised former Malaysian badminton player Bong Guang Yik for uttering racist remarks through his Douyin account.

In a statement today, Yeoh said she strongly condemned Bong’s speech because it contained racial and religious elements even though the latter had apologised.

“I believe that religion has never disturbed the performance of athletes and sports. This has never been a problem in Malaysia.

“I repeat my position - sports must be free of racism and politics. All national athletes are a source of inspiration for the country and are advised to be careful with their social media content,” she said.

Several days ago, Bong made racial and religious remarks during his criticism of the Badminton Association of Malaysia.

Yesterday, Bong uploaded another video where he admitted he had “gone overboard” and apologised for his remarks.

According to Yeoh, Bong has not been on the Malaysian badminton team since 2014 and is currently residing abroad.

Bong is currently based in China as a coach.

Meanwhile, former world number one doubles player Tan Boon Heong also criticised Bong over his conduct.

“If you want to do business, do it the right way. Don’t talk about people’s religion.

“If you want to be famous, this is not the way. Respect others please,” wrote Tan on his Facebook page. - Mkini
