Hisham: Is Zahid sincere in 'inviting' ousted members to rejoin Umno?

Former Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein has questioned Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s “invitation” for members who were previously sacked and suspended to return to the party fold.

Speaking to reporters at the Parliament lobby today, Hishammuddin (above, right) was doubtful of his former party boss’ sincerity on the matter.

“It doesn’t make sense! I don't see why I have to leave my fate to the disciplinary board.

“When I was first suspended by the supreme council, the disciplinary board did not call me in for an investigation.

"So, I don't even know if what was expressed (by Zahid) recently is sincere or not.

“For me, what was proposed may be a reaction, calls from below (the grassroots),” the Sembrong MP told reporters.

This comes after Zahid (above), during his winding-up speech at the Umno general assembly last Saturday, said that the Malay nationalist party is open to calls to get sacked members to return to the party.

Nothing to lose

Elaborating on the matter, Hishammuddin said members who have been sacked or suspended have nothing to lose.

“We have been suspended, anyway. It’s up to them (to rejoin or not).

“If they really need our services, any sarcasm or conditional offers do not mean anything to me.”

On Jan 27, the Umno supreme council meeting suspended Hishammuddin, former Jempol MP Salim Sharif, former Tiram assemblyperson Maulizan Bujang as well as former deputy youth chief Shahril Suffian Hamdan.

Khairy Jamaluddin

Khairy Jamaluddin and former supreme council member Noh Omar were also sacked.

Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said the two leaders were sacked for going against the party's discipline during the last 15th general election.

Recently, the rumour mill went into overdrive with both Noh and Khairy rumoured to be joining Perikatan Nasional (PN).

Yesterday, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said PN is counting on Khairy to join the coalition due to his formidable character and skills as part of Umno's leadership.

In May, it was reported that Muhyiddin had offered Khairy a “high post” in Bersatu supreme leadership council.

The former prime minister said the offer for Khairy was still on the table, adding that the latter had the experience and calibre to contribute to his party. - Mkini
