After almost four months of vacancy, the government has finally announced the appointment of Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi as the new auditor-general.
In a statement today, Chief Secretary to the Government Mohd Zuki Ali said after a discussion with the Council of Rulers, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has endorsed the appointment of Wan Suraya, effective tomorrow, in accordance with the Federal Constitution 105 (1).
Wan Suraya (above) has 29 years of experience in the civil service, with her last post being the CEO of the Malaysian Institute of Integrity.
The auditor-general position has been vacant since Nik Azman Nik Abdul Majid retired last February.
Nik Azman was first appointed in 2019, and his term was renewed for two years in 2021.
Last week, the Public Accounts Committee chairperson Mas Ermieyati Samsudin criticised the government for the long delays in appointing the new auditor-general.
She said the delay has spillover effects as crucial reports cannot be presented.
"The main issue is that the auditor-general's report cannot be presented, because only the auditor-general can submit the report to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong allowing it to be presented in the Dewan Rakyat in accordance with Article 107 (1) of the Federal Constitution," she said. - Mkini
