Muhyiddin wants ballots of anger, tells voters state polls a referendum

The increasing cost of living and prices of goods are crushing the poor and the people can no longer tolerate the situation, according to Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin.

Therefore, the former premier urged voters in the upcoming elections for six states to treat the contest as a referendum against the Pakatan Harapan-BN coalition government.

Muhyiddin (above) is also optimistic about the people’s support for his coalition based on the large turnout at PN’s event in Negeri Sembilan last night and in other states before this.

Overwhelmed with the “wave of uprising” (gelombang kebangkitan), he believed this would translate into votes for PN.

“This is because the people can see and feel what is happening.

“The crushing cost of living, the increase in the prices of goods… the depreciation of the ringgit and the directionless national economy.

“The situation is sufficient proof that the coalition government has failed to steer the nation out of the economic conundrum which is affecting lives, especially those from the low-income group,” he added in a Facebook posting this afternoon.

‘People can no longer tolerate’

Muhyiddin claimed that the promises made during the last general election have not been implemented despite the government being in power for six months.

“The people can no longer tolerate the situation.

“I wish to call on the people of Negeri Sembilan and the five other states to vote for PN so that it serves as a protest referendum against the coalition government.

“Turn the elections into a signal of the people’s anger with what is happening,” he added.

The coming polls would witness contests in three Harapan-controlled states - Penang, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor - as well as three PN-ruled states - Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah.

The state elections are regarded as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s first litmus test since cobbling together an alliance comprising former foes following the political deadlock in the aftermath of last November’s national polls.

In a recent interview, the Harapan chairperson, however, ruled out that an unfavourable outcome in the state polls would have an impact on the federal government.

Responding to a question if there are concerns about the opposition pushing for a no-confidence vote, Anwar said: “They can put some pressure, but they will not, in any way, affect the position of the federal government.” - Mkini
