Nurses' uniforms too tight, not syariah-compliant: PN MP

PARLIAMENT | Many women nurses’ uniforms are too tight and, therefore, not syariah-compliant, said Wan Razali Wan Nor (PN-Kuantan).

In his debate on the Health White Paper in the Dewan Rakyat today, the PAS lawmaker asked if the dress code for women nurses could be relaxed.

“I would like to raise the dressing etiquette of women nurses where most of them are wearing tight clothes and the shape of their bodies can be seen, which is not syariah compliant.

“I would like to ask, do we still want to continue following the Western style in the matter of this dressing etiquette?

“Can it not be changed and given flexibility?” he asked.

Wan Razali gave the example of several hospitals such as USM Kubang Kerian Hospital in Kelantan and Sultan Ahmad Shah Kuantan Medical Centre in Pahang that allow their women staff to wear “more suitable” clothing.

Salamiah Mohd Nor (PN-Temerloh), who spoke in the Dewan Rakyat later, also supported his suggestion.

“Temerloh supports what Kuantan said about dressing etiquette which should be syariah compliant, especially for hospital officers,” she said at the end of her debate.

It is worth noting that last March, Wan Razali claimed in Parliament that there were LGBT elements involved in a Women's March held in Kuala Lumpur.

Wan Razali, however, could not provide any evidence to back his claim, when Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul asked him to do so. He later retracted the claim. - Mkini
