PARLIAMENT | The Transport Ministry does not plan to revive the "Feri Malaysia" service, which connected Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia by sea.
However, the government will consider any proposals by private companies willing to provide such services, Transport Minister Anthony Loke told the Dewan Rakyat.
Loke was responding to Richard Riot Jaem (GPS - Serian), who asked if Putrajaya will revive the service as an alternative means of travelling between the two regions.
During the Parliamentary elections last year, BN had promised to revive "Feri Malaysia".
"Feri Malaysia" was operational from 1986 to 1989, connecting Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Kuantan through a two-day voyage.
The vessel - Cruise Muhibah - had a capacity of 650 and could carry passenger vehicles.
However, an engine fire broke out on October 18, 1987, about 5km off Pulau Tioman, Pahang.
That marked the end of the "Feri Malaysia" service, which officially ceased operations two years later. - Mkini
