Sabah-based Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM) today announced that it would withdraw its support for the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) state government.
The decision comes as KDM plans to form a new political alignment with other Sabah-based parties under what it calls a “Borneo Bloc”, according to a news report.
KDM acting president Priscella Peter said the party’s supreme council reached the decision during its annual gathering in Papar today.
Describing it as a difficult step, she said the move was necessary for KDM to regain the confidence of its grassroots supporters ahead of the next general election.
Daily Express quoted Priscella as saying KDM would contest the general election in partnership with other local parties that champion Sabah’s interests. She also did not rule out cooperation with Warisan and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star).
KDM’s withdrawal is unlikely to significantly affect the state government’s stability, as the party holds only one of Sabah’s 73 state assembly seats.
At the federal level, KDM has two MPs - Wetrom Bahanda (Kota Marudu) and Riduan Rubin (Tenom). - Mkini
