KL City Hall will make a decision over Dataran Merdeka after meeting with police next week.
PETALING JAYA: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is keeping its lips sealed over whether it will allow Bersih 3.0 to hold a rally at Dataran Merdeka on April 28.
KL Datuk Bandar Ahmad Fuad Ismail told FMT that DBKL was planning to meet with Kuala Lumpur police chief Mohamad Salleh next week before coming to a decision.
He added that DBKL had yet to hear from Bersih’s leaders about the venue.
Yesterday, Bersih steering committee member Maria Chin Abdullah said that the electoral reform group would meet with DBKL when it was “ready”.
The group announced its intention to hold a sit-down protest at Dataran Merdeka, after the approval of the Parliamentary Select Committee’s (PSC) report on electoral reforms.
Top government officials did not condemn the rally, though they have been coy about lettting it take place in Dataran Merdeka.
Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein advised Bersih to meet with the police over the matter, and choose a venue which was not troublesome to the public.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Abdul Aziz said that Bersih needed to get permission from Dataran Merdeka’s owners before going ahead with the rally.
Bersih is planning to conduct simultaneous rallies in nine towns and cities across Malaysia, as well as 33 foreign cities worldwide on April 28.
