Defence Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi filed a libel suit against PKR director of strategy Rafizi Ramli today over alleged defamatory statements made on his blog against him regarding the Bukit Raja land deal involving carpet businessman Deepak Jaikishan.
The suit was filed through the firm of Majid Krishna Menon and Lee at the Kuala Lumpur High Court this morning.
In Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's (left) statement of claim, he complained of the article, dated Dec 29, 2012, titled 'Dakwaan Deepak ada asas, wang rakyat disalah guna untuk menutup mulut Deepak' (There is basis to Deepak's claims, public funds are abused to keep Deepak quiet), and that the minister and Umno vice-president is seeking special and general damages (no amount specified), along with aggravated and exemplary damages.
He is also seeking a complete retraction of the defamatory article, as well as a public apology and order to restrain Rafizi and his agents to remove the defamatory article, and an injunction barring the PKR director of strategy or his agents from repeating the defamatory words including, but not limited to forums, gatherings, ceramah (talks), and election campaigns.

Ahmad Zahid claimed that the defamatory words in the article meant that he was incompetent in holding his office as defence minister, abused his power as minister, that he and the prime minister committed acts of dishonesty and insincerity, and that he was a dishonest, insincere and irresponsible person.
The article written by Rafizi on his blog also placed the Umno vice-president in a bad light as it portrayed him of abusing public funds. In particular, it accused him of having committed the offence of breaking the trust and misappropriation of funds of the contributions from the army personnel with regards to the Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT).

He complained that the blog posting was also repeated and republished in Malaysia Chronicle, selangorku.com and Free Malaysia Today. The defence minister also said in his claim that he would refer to the articles posted on those websites during the trial.
Ahmad Zahid, in the statement of claim, alleged that the blog posting on rafiziramli.com was calculated to damage and injure his reputation and credibility.
It is also to disparage his name, erode the confidence of the public on the Barisan Nasional in the coming general election and the words printed had affected the minister’s credit, reputation and brought him into scandal, odium and contempt.
Ahmad Zahid claimed that his lawyers had written to Rafizi to withdraw the contentious article but he had failed to do so.
