Woman shocked after realising news on Semporna ambush involves her own brother

BESUT, March 3 — When a woman in Melaka read an online news report about the five policemen who were killed in an ambush during a police raid on a village in Semporna, Sabah, yesterday, little did she know that one of the policemen was her own brother, Supt Ibrahim Lebar.

Ibrahim's elder sister, Mek Nab Lebar, 60, when met at her house in Kampung Jabi here, said her youngest sister called her from Melaka late last night, telling her about the news she just read in the internet about the tragedy.

"I started to have a very bad feeling... but I refused to believe it. So, I called Ibrahim's wife, Rosiah, in Subang Jaya, Selangor, and she said it's not confirmed.

"At 8am today, Rosiah called me back and told me that the police had confirmed it was her husband, who is also my brother, who was killed in the incident," she told reporters here.

Ibrahim, 52, who is a senior officer from Bukit Aman Special Branch, together with four other policemen, were killed in an ambush by a group of armed men, two of whom were also killed, in Kampung Sri Jaya, Simunul, Semporna, Sabah last night.

They had been ordered to carry out an investigation at the village following a tip-off that there was a group of armed men there. Ibrahim had been stationed in Semporna over the past two weeks and was scheduled to return to Kuala Lumpur today.

According to Mek Nab, Ibrahim, who is affectionately known as 'Sudin' and is the ninth of 10 siblings, was a very friendly person.

She said the last time she saw her brother was on Jan 24 during a feast they held at their family home here in conjunction with Prophet Muhammad's birthday.

"Sudin loved to eat nasi kerabu. Every time he came here, he would buy or insist that I cook it for him and his family," she said.

Ibrahim left behind a wife, two sons and a daughter. His remains would be laid to rest at the Muslim cemetery in USJ, Subang Jaya, Selangor. — Bernama
