Incumbents win clean sweep despite Mukhriz challenge

Incumbent Umno vice-presidents Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Shafie Apdal have retained their positions by a landslide at the party polls today, according to unofficial results.

NONEBoth Ahmad Zahid and Shafie have passed the 96-vote simple majority mark, while the third incumbent, Hishammuddin Hussein, is slowly catching up towards the coveted final vice-president spot.

About 167 out of 191 divisions have informally announced their results, so with only four votes away from garnering simple majority, Hishammuddin looks most likely to come out on top.

Fifteen votes now separate Hishammuddin and challenger Mukhriz Mahathir.

Mukhriz failed to garner much support in Johor, succeeding only in getting the votes from two divisions - Tebrau and Johor Bahru.

While he reportedly obtained 397 votes in Tebrau, ahead of the other five candidates, this failed to give him much headway as 26 other state divisions threw their support behind the three incumbents.
Meanwhile, other two challengers, Mohd Ali Rustam and Mohd Isa Samad have only pulled off a lackluster performance and is officially out of the race.

Below is the current unofficial results:
  1. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi -166
  2. Shafie Apdal -152
  3. Hishammuddin Hussein -92
  4. Mukhriz Mahathir -77
  5. Mohd Ali Rustam -7
  6. Mohd Isa Samad -8

The results are correct as of 11pm.

Some 146,000 delegates cast their votes earlier today.

According to Umno Online, Umno executive secretary Ab Rauf Yusoh said official results will only be announced from 10pm.

This is the first time Umno has expanded its voting base to 146,000 delegates from the previous 2,500 delegates.

Under the new system, delegates will vote for their favourite candidates at the divisional level.

Candidates who garner the highest votes will win the division, and those who win the bulk of the party's 191 divisions nationwide will emerge victorious.

Umno has touted the new system as an attempt to democratise the party and to combat money politics.
