'Power bill for Seri Perdana complex, not residence alone'

The RM 2.2 million electricity bill chalked up by the Prime Minister’s Seri Perdana residence includes the entire residential complex and not premier's abode alone, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Shahidan Kassim said today.

"This includes the multi purpose hall and the staff quarters there," said Shahidan during a press conference at the Parliament lobby today.

"There isn’t a different electricity rate for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and Rosmah Mansor's bedroom when he sleeps compared to a normal couple in the village. It’s the same," he said.

Shahidan said that people should "understand" the issue better before generating a discussion about the matter.

In a written reply to the Dewan Rakyat, Shahidan had revealed that the electricity bill was the total amount charged to Seri Perdana for 2012.
Pakatan 'experts' want GST
During the same press conference, Shahidan claimed that the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was also supported by several "economic experts" from the Opposition.

"They don't want to be quoted but few of them have told me in confidence that they agree, no matter who rules, GST must be implemented," he said.

Shahidan said that the opposition lawmakers he is referring to only disagreed with the rate of the GST implementation and not GST as a whole.

Shahidan then went on to speak about government scholarships, insisting that some quarters were wrong to claim that the government did not favour non-Bumiputra students while handing out government scholarships.

"Since 2009, we always gave at least 40 percent of the scholarships for non-Bumiputras. This is despite there being only 32 percent non-Bumiputras in the country. That means that we are giving the scholarships on merit," he said.
