Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali has likened the abolition of subsidy for sugar to the Internal Security Act (ISA).
Like the law which carried out preventive detention, Ibrahim said the hike in sugar price is a preventive action against diabetes.
“It’s just like the introduction of ISA, when sugar price is high, that’s prevention.
“Prevention is better than cure, this is a health ISA,” he told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.
The ISA was repealed last year. However, amendments to the Prevention of Crime Act (PCA) this month have reintroduced preventive detention.

The sugar price rose by 34 sen per kg yesterday after Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak announced a withdrawal of the government subsidy, stating that it was for the benefit of the people's health.
‘Perkasa backs GST’
Similarly, Ibrahim said Perkasa also support the government's plan to introduce the goods and services tax (GST) in 2015.
He added that he was satisfied with Budget 2014 but insisted that more affirmative action is still needed by the bumiputera community as they are now also exposed to global competition.
On another matter, Ibrahim said Perkasa has formed a committee to oversee efforts by government-linked companies (GLCs) in increasing bumiputera participation.
“This is in line with the prime minister’s announcement of the Bumiputera Economic Empowerment programme,” he said.
Furthermore, he said that the auditor-general should also review the audit report of GLCs which are done by chartered accountants as GLCs also handle public funds.
