Citywide electricity blackout in KK

Electricity supply in Kota Kinabalu was cut for most parts of the Sabah capital starting about 3.30pm today with portions still in the dark as dusk fell.

“Respected customers, Kota Kinabalu is now undergoing electricity supply disruption.

“SESB is now doing repair works. We apologise for the inconvenience,” the Sabah power provider Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd said in a brief statement on its website.

There was no explanation for the large blackout, which is the second to happen in Sabah this year.

SESB had blamed the statewide outage in January on independent power producers.

Meanwhile, the power company also announced extensive load shedding scheduled for today which also affects part of Kota Kinabalu.

The load shedding is scheduled for three-hour blocks from 9am to 9pm at the districts of Sandakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu, Kota Kinabalu, Beaufort, Sipitang, Kayul, Kimanis, Kudat, Kota Belud, Sepanggar, Penampang, Kepayan, Lok Kawi, Tenom, Papar, Limbawang, Tambunan, Tuaran, Semporna and Mansud.

Load shedding, or rolling blackouts, is when supply is staggered in different regions at different times, as a last resort to avoid total blackout.

Black505 irony

The Kota Kinabalu blackout ironically coincides with the anniversary of the 13th general election.

Sabah was a key state in the polls, with the BN winning on the back of Sabah parliamentary seats.

Ironically, Pakatan Rakyat hosted several rallies after its defeat, dubbed 'Black505', in reference to what it claimed to be electoral fraud.

One big winner in the 13th polls was PKR's Penampang MP Darell Leiking (right, in white)who toppled Sabah BN strongman and Upko chief Bernard Dompok.

“I just would like to extend my sincere thank you, xie die, kotohuadan and terima kasih to each and all those who gave us the trust to be your elected representative and at the same time seek your kind understanding and forgiveness for any shortcomings throughout this one year.

“I pledge to continue and improve my role as your Representative albeit we are in the Opposition.

“Godspeed all and oh ya, Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd, please and please get the electricity running!” Leiking wrote on Facebook.

LATEST at 9PM

Most parts of Kota Kinabalu have already got their power supply restored.
