The Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (Abim) has urged anti-Cadbury Muslim factions not to overreact by wanting blood transfusions and the burning of the chocolate factory.
The branded chocolate maker is under investigation after porcine DNA was found in several products from its Malaysian factory after tests by the Ministry of Health.
Abim said it hopes the company will eventually be punished under the relevant laws, and this will also prompt the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) to step up enforcement of the Halal Act, which is to ensure Muslims are not exposed to forbidden food.
Abim said it was embarrassed by the reactions of some the other so-called Muslim NGOs.
"Emotional statements that are beyond rational thought are an embarrassment to all Muslims. The suggestion to burn the factory, to do blood transfusion and so on are all extreme suggestions," Abim president Amidi Abdul Manan (left) said in a press statement today.
Such uncouth urgings, Amidi said, could only come from Muslims with a superficial understanding of Islam.
"For the religion to prosper, Islam has to show Allah's grace and love, what more when the food is consumed without knowledge and awareness that it contained elements from the pig," Amidi said.
Yesterday, a gathering of NGOs, including the Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM), Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) and Darul Islah Welfare body (Perkid) declared a holy war (jihad) against Cadbury for allegedly putting the forbidden pig element into some batches of its Malaysian-made chocolate.
They also want factory shut down
Adding to threats to sue the company, these NGOs said that even RM1 billion won't be enough to compensate those who consumed the contaminated chocolate and urged a boycott of Cadbury. They also want the factory closed down.
Abim’s Amidi slammed those who urged that the intestines of those who consumed the chocolate to be exorcised because they may have eaten the two Cadbury products that are still being analysed.
“This is clearly beyond the demand of Islamic syariah law. Muslims don’t have to come out with such statements even if we are angry. Know that Islam has respectable and wise solutions,” he added.
