'Non-Muslim asked about Islam an isolated case'

Rural and Regional Development Minister Mohd Shafie Apdal has described incidences where non-Muslim students applying for Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) scholarships were asked questions on Islamic issues as "isolated" cases.

Borneo Post reported Mohd Shafie as promising that corrective measures would be taken to address the matter.

“I have already held a discussion with the director (of Mara), especially on the need for asking such questions in scholarship application interviews. He will look into the matter.

“I believe this is an isolated case and corrective action will be taken to ensure this is not repeated,” he was quoted as saying in Kuching.

On Wednesday, Parti Rakyat Sarawak president James Masing (right) had highighted a case where Iban student Nigel Unchat Jeremiah who was applying for a Mara scholarship was asked about hudud and Islamic prayers.

The student was hoping for a scholarship to pursue a mechanical engineering programme at Kolej Mara Seremban, Negri Sembilan.

James added he had received similar complaints from other Iban students and that such questions should have no bearing on their scholarship applications.
