The cyber warfare in the Teluk Intan by-election continues, this time a photograph of DAP candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud at an event with Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali is circulating on the internet.
The undated picture features a smiling Ibrahim standing in between Dyana and her mother Yammy Samat in what looks like a dinner event.
Circulated on Facebook by those who seem to be unaffiliated to political parties, the picture has led some to question Dyana's ties with Ibrahim, who is often condemned by the DAP for his right-wing and racial politics.
Some even claimed that Ibrahim is her ‘bapa angkat’ (adopted father), a term which in the Malay context means a close family friend.
However, checks found that the photograph was from an event at a Kuala Lumpur restaurant held last week in Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah's honour.
The event was hosted by Ibrahim to celebrate Razaleigh beingawarded an honorary doctorate by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).
Dyana had attended the dinner with her mother Yammy Samat, alongside many others who were once with Razaleigh in the Umno splinter party Semangat 46.
Ibrahim was a senior leader in Semangat 46 and won the Pasir Mas seat for the party in 1990.
The event was also attended by selected UiTM alumni includingUtusan Malaysia editor Zaini Hassan who wrote about it in his column on May 14.
“This was a Semangat 46 reunion,” Dyana's media relations team told Malaysiakini.
Ibrahim: Everybody knows Yammy
Dyana in a commentary before her candidacy was announced, too, had alluded that her mother was sidelined in Umno due to her allegiance to Razaleigh in the 1987 Umno split.
When contacted, Ibrahim said that he is close to Yammy, who still is Razaleigh's “staunch supporter”.
“In 1984, we campaigned for (Razaleigh) against Musa (Hitam) for the Umno deputy president post and in 1987, we backed him for the Umno post.
“Everyone in Umno Wanita knows Yammy and almost all Umno leaders knows her,” he said, denying that he is Dyana's bapa angkat.
Before this, pro-Umno blogs had circulated a picture of a Filipina actress in a bikini and passed her off Dyana.
Although Dyana laughed it off by saying that she wished that she had such a body, the issue has yet to die down with BN quarters accusing the DAP of circulating the photograph themselves to generate publicity for the 27-year-old.
Gerakan, which has fielded its president Mah Siew Keong in the straight fight, has condemned the circulation of the bikini picture.
A pro-Umno blog yesterday also featured a picture of Dyana seemingly hugging a puppy.
However, the blog claims that the picture was doctored from a picture of Dyana hugging kittens, and that it was another ploy by DAP cybertroopers to bait Umno bloggers.
Teluk Intan goes to the polls on May 31.
