Perkasa denies it is organising pro-GST rally

Right wing Malay rights group Perkasa has denied that it will organise a mammoth rally in support of the goods and services tax (GST) and instead blamed the word being spread about this on the “Red Bean Army”.

"Perkasa denies that it will organise this rally, which has been said will take place at Dataran Merdeka on May 12.

"Perkasa is certain this is the dirty work of the Red Bean Army, which received millions of dollars from the Americans," Perkasa secretary-general Syed Hassan Syed Ali (right) said in a statement last night.

Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia introduced the term "Red Bean Army" to describe a cybertroop unit it claimed was hired by the DAP.

DAP has vehemently denied the existence of any such group and called it a figment of imagination of Utusan.

Syed Hassan was referring to a banner circulated on the social media, titled "A million rakyat in support of GST", which carried Perkasa's logo and a picture of its president Ibrahim Ali.

The event was supposedly being co-organised with another right wing NGO, Pertubuhan Jalur Tiga (Jati).

Syed Hassan said his organisation would lodge a police report over the fake event.

Ibrahim yesterday called on the Congress of Union of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) to organise a "mega rally" to explain the GST to members of the public.

He declared Perkasa's support for any such rally should it take place, but did not say Perkasa would be organising one of its own.
