The Sultan of Terengganu has not dissolved the state legislative assembly, contrary to rumours on social media saying otherwise, New Straits Times (NST) reported today.
Speaker Mohd Zubir Embong told NST that despite Barisan Nasional (BN) losing its majority in the assembly today, he had not received any information or official statement regarding the matter.
He said he was sure of the status of the assembly, as dissolving it involved certain procedures – including the menteri besar having to seek an audience with Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin.
BN lost its majority in the assembly after Datuk Seri Ahmad Said quit the party hours after he was replaced by Datuk Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman as Terengganu Menteri Besar.
The former menteri besar and Kijal assemblyman was soon joined by Ajil assemblyman Ghazali Taib to become independent candidates. This morning, Bukit Besi assemblyman Roslee Daud also quit Umno.
The latest developments leave BN with 14 seats, one fewer than Pakatan Rakyat's 15 in the 32-seat assembly.
In the 13th general election, BN won 17 state seats against Pakatan Rakyat's 15, and managed to win half of the eight Parliamentary seats in the state.
