Telcos fined RM1.2 mil for dropped calls

Telecommunications companies (telcos) Maxis, Celcom, DiGi and U Mobile have been slapped with compounds worth RM1.2 million for dropped calls last year.

In a statement, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said that this was six times more than compounds issued in March 2013.

MCMC said the high dropped call rates were detected in extensive end-point service availability testing in July to Sept 2013, after public complaints.

Celcom was served seven compounds totalling RM310,000, DiGi 11 compounds totalling RM480,000, Maxis nine compounds amounting to RM460,000 and U Mobile received one compound of RM50,000.

“We view complaints about telcos very seriously, especially for failing to deliver to consumers the service they claimed to offer. Any action taken against them must comply with due process under the law,” MCMC chairperson Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi said.

Sharil also urged the people to continue sending in complaints and urged service providers to comply or face sterner action.

MCMC found that the dropped calls rate were on average three percent higher than mandatory service standards nationwide.

Maxis provided the worst service in July to September 2013, with a dropped call rate of 8.16 percent in Pendang, Kedah.

This was followed by DiGi, where calls at Laluan Jalan Utama from Tuaran to Kudat and from Membakut to Keningau dropped at a rate of eight percent and 7.78 percent respectively.

In January to March 2014, Maxis' dropped call rates doubled while the other telcos improved their service.
