According to news reports, Malaysia’s Home Minister and the political party UMNO’s Vice President has said that there is no point in voting for DAP’s Teluk Intan candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud for her looks.
The report further states that Ahmad Zahid Hamidi – who is the second most powerful man in his political party, went on to state that ‘(Dyana) is not as pretty in person as in pictures and on television.’
He was telling this to some 200 men in blue in Teluk Intan.
Worst, the report adds that Zahid ‘had personally met Dyana once and was not impressed by her appearance.’
The Malaysian Insider quotes Zahid advising uniformed personnel of the Malaysian Polis DiRaja, “If you want to choose who is pretty but cannot serve you, what is the point?”
“I looked at her, I shook her hand, she’s not pretty.”
And to all these insults showered on Dyana by their big boss, the police personnel seemed to have laughed.
Vulgar sexism pushed by a govt leader
Now this is serious, damn serious. It is certainly demeaning woman hood. It is vulgar. It is totally against all aspects of spirituality, let alone religious beliefs, cultural standards and social norms.
Zahid, if the media has twisted and maligned your statements, please take them to court with immediacy. The citizens will not tolerate either.
But Media, if you are being threatened with a heavy arm when what you published is the whole truth and nothing but the truth, please fire your cannons. Surely all the other compatriot media which still operate with integrity must also join forces. The citizens will not take it lying down.
Meanwhile, if it is true that the Home Minister did say these words that certainly insults and desecrates a fellow human, then it is high time that all the women of this nation joined forces and demanded his immediate resignation.
No leader has that right or license to speak in such demonizing terms. No man worth his existence can be let off as this can be a sickening cancer of attitudes and mindsets that will only spread in the country.
What are we teaching our young? What is leadership if our ‘leadership by example’ makes such demeaning, vulgar and discriminatory statements in public about a woman?
Does Zahid’s sense of spirituality not dictate that all of us – irrespective of race and religion, sex and color, looks and well being, status and stature, are all creations of God? Is he so totally insensitive that he cannot even see or hear how even Pope Francis had recently embraced even people afflicted by medical conditions that cruelly distorted their being-ness?
What type of progress is Malaysia chasing with such 'time-warped' leaders at the helm?
Surely, if what was reported in The Malaysian Insider is absolutely true, even his UMNO followers must take offence. Otherwise they are equally guilty of a similar sense of crime against human kind.
Unfortunately, it is reported that the 200 odd police personnel seemed to have broken out in laughter when Zahid made those insults. They should have immediately corrected him as they are servants to the Ruler not a Vice President of a political party.
Indeed, what transformation are we talking about? Indeed too what Wawasan 2020 are we chasing after?
Does transformation and achieving Vision 2020 not mean that we must respect and return the dignity of humanity to the people of Malaysia? Is it not true that two of the nine challenges of Vision 2020 is about creating a caring culture that can only be borne out of respect, dignity and honor?
But here we have a Vice President of a dominant political party running down creation using sensual standards that not only insult women but robs our society of decency by any religious standards, believes and the very essence of spirituality that binds all human kind.
It is a crying shame that must be condemned by all leaders, followers and citizen-groups. - MAILBAG
