Dr M: I’m ready to swear on the Quran

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is ready to swear on the Quran should he be challenged to do so.

The vocal nonagenarian today was asked whether he was willing to swear on the Quran as he had challenged attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali to do the same.

“If what I say is considered as slander or it is not truthful and someone asked me to swear, I will do it, then.

“Since I asked others to do it, I must be ready to swear, too, but with the right intention.

“(It shouldn’t be) with the wrong intention and swearing aloud something else,” Mahathir said at a press conference in Petaling Jaya today.

Mahathir last week said Apandi must swear on the Quran that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and Bank Negara did not implicate Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in graft.

"As a good Muslim, he (Apandi) should swear on the Quran in a mosque witnessed by mosque officials and the public that the reports did not implicate Najib in any way.

"He should not try to cheat by vowing in his heart something else, and swearing aloud something else. That would be a double sin. He will go to a worse hell," Mahathir had said.

Apandi last month had cleared Najib of any wrongdoing in the RM2.6 billion donation and RM42 million SRC International scandals.

Meanwhile, Mahathir was asked for his wish in conjunction with Najib’s 40th year in politics.

The vocal Najib critic said he had high hopes on the premier as he was the son of a former prime minister who had contributed greatly to the country.

“But I find his performance today is very much different.

“I hope he will go back to the ways of his father as his father had contributed a lot to our country’s development,” he said. -Mkini
