The public should not make fun of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor for practising their faith because worship is a personal matter, a mufti said.
"Even though you have different political views or don't like him, when it comes to someone's worship, leave it between them and God.
"Furthermore, I don't see him claiming that his worship erases everything that the people are disputing," Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainal Abidin said in a Facebook posting today.
Asri added that God condemns and forgives whom he pleases.
The mufti was responding to jabs made against Najib on social media after the prime minister shared photos of him and his wife performing the umrah (minor haj). He also performed the religious ritual last year (photo).
Najib was in Mecca as part of a working visit to Saudi Arabia.
The premier’s Facebook postings have been the target of many social media users, especially in regard to the RM2.6 billion donation scandal.
He has denied allegations of misappropriating public funds for personal use.
Attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali has also cleared the prime minister of any criminal misconduct in regard to the case, a decision which the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission is appealing. -Mkini
