The police are checking if the document disclosed by PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli is part of the Auditor-General's Report, which falls under the Official Secrets Act (OSA).
"If it is proven to be an OSA document, then we have no choice but to take action based on the law," Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar told Malaysiakini.
"But let us investigate first to determine if the document is indeed part of the AG report," he said, adding that police are checking with Auditor-General's Department.
Responding to a question, Khalid said if it is proven that the document is classified, then police would also investigate who leaked it.
Yesterday, Rafizi exposed the document which he claimed can prove 1MDB's link with the Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT).
The Pandan MP made the drastic decision despite the risk of being slapped with up to seven years jail sentence for exposing an official secret.
Following this, 1MDB urged Parliament and other relevant authorities to investigate Rafizi.
1MDB said the MP revealed an excerpt of the AG report on 1MDB to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which has been classified an official secret.
"Rafizi cannot claim he is a whistleblower or is acting in the public interest, given that the PAC, a lawful authority with five opposition members, already has access to and is presently reviewing the AG's report on 1MDB," it said in a statement.
Apart from Rafizi, PAC member and DAP lawmaker Tony Pua is also a staunch critic of 1MDB, which is Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's brainchild.
1MDB, however, claims the accusations against it are politically-motivated. -Mkini
