Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor today said that he has yet to receive any resignation letter from Dr Mahathir Mohamad on his exit from the party.
“I don't know [...] I have yet to receive the letter,” he said when asked for his comment on Mahathir’s decision to leave the party for the second time which he announced yesterday.
Asked to comment on Mahathir who was said to be joining forces with the opposition, Tengku Adnan simply said he was unaware of that.
“I don’t know,” the Putrajaya MP repeated.
He, however, said that he was of the opinion that Umno would not be affected by Mahathir’s decision to leave the party.
“Each month, we have more people joining Umno. We are not affected,” he said.
Mahathir yesterday said that he was quitting Umno in protest against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak alleged mishandling of 1MDB and various financial woes which have hit the country.
He was also reported to have proposed the setting up of a core group on the fight against Najib.
It’s the second time Mahathir and his wife have quit the party to protest against a sitting prime minister.
The couple previously quit Umno in 2008 to protest Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's leadership and only rejoined when Abdullah stepped down in 2009. -Mkini
