Umno's problems cannot be solved if dissenting voices quit or are suspended from the party, said former Wanita Umno chief Rafidah Aziz.
She said this would only make Umno's leadership look bad.
"What's happening now gives a bad image of Umno's administration, which has run astray from its motto – 'unity, loyalty, serve'.
"The problems that we face now can't be solved with sackings, resignations, in-fighting, and showing behavior not reflective of Umno's culture," Rafidah said in a Facebook posting last night.
She said instead, the party should find ways to make peace, unite, and encourage open and honest thinking and conversation.
Rafidah also said that the Umno she knew told members to serve the public and not serve the interest of individuals.
However, she did not specify who exactly she meant by individuals.
Rafidah's post was made hours after former Umno president Dr Mahathir Mohamad quit the party to protest Najib Abdul Razak's leadership.
Mahathir said Umno was no longer a party meant to serve the country, but was instead a party meant to serve and protect Najib.
The former prime minister then called for the formation of a core group to coordinate the fight against Najib. -mkini
