PARLIAMENT Police are always on standby to face militant threats, including the use of biological weapons such as anthrax or sarin gas, said Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
"For now, no threat of attack (using biological weapons) has been detected by the militant groups, which are viewed as not having the expertise to carry out such attacks," Zahid said in a written parliamentary reply on Thursday.
He was responding to a question by Noor Ehsanuddin Mohd Harun Rashid (BN-Kota Tinggi) on the level of preparedness to face biological attacks from groups such as the Islamic State (IS), Sulu militants, and Abu Sayaf.
The government has warned that Malaysia is being targeted by IS.
Zahid said the militant group had plotted to kidnap him and several other leaders including Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak last year.
However, he said the plot was foiled thanks to security laws such as the Prevention of Terrorism Act (Pota).
The closest IS attacks to Malaysia was the attack on Jakarta in January in which four civilians and four terrorists were killed. -Mkini
